Heard via the collaboration with Gazelle Twin, another unknown to me artist and had to buy both immediately! Exaclty what I want from music! Music that moves you....
Three embodied, electronic meditations by NYX and friends.
Over recent weeks we’ve been asking ourselves what we can do to help during these testing times, this is where we decided to start. As a collective who believe firmly in the healing power of music through sonic immersion, we’re pleased to share this new 3-track EP of ambient, cathartic and euphoric soundscapes. Music to go within when you can’t go out. These musical sketches, demos and rehearsal recordings were all created between 2018-19.
This release is exclusive to Bandcamp with 50% of profits being donated to The Trussell Trust, a charity that supports a network of over 1,200 food bank centres in the UK, and the Samaritans, who are providing essential mental health services during this global pandemic. The other 50% will be much-needed support for the NYX collective, helping us to keep our heads above water during this time when all of our live shows have been cancelled or postponed.
Somme
A rehearsal recording from summer 2019 composed by Sian O’Gorman, performed by NYX.
From the original soundtrack of the 2019 documentary Meetings With Remarkable Men, Somme is a journey through the grief and ancestral trauma passed down within the human experience of war. The voice of the Vimy Ridge Memorial Statue cries out over the battlefields of WW1 - grieving for her brother, her lover, her son, her father and the broken families left behind.
Lao Tzu
Lao Tzu is a breathing, liminal passage flowing through a sequence of ancient gongs, singing bowl reversed loops, pitch shifted bass and a crescendo of synthesised voice. NYX’s collective voice summons wisdom from Ursula Le Guin’s translation of the Taoist spiritual guide, Tao Te Ching:
“The way you can go isn't the real way. The name you can say isn't the real name. Heaven and earth begin in the unnamed: name's the mother of the ten thousand things. So the unwanting soul sees what's hidden, and the ever-wanting soul sees only what it wants. Two things, one origin, but different in name, whose identity is mystery. Mystery of all mysteries! The door to the hidden.”
Sylvia
A demo from NYX’s deep listening concert series in 2018/2019 co-composed by Sian O’Gorman for NYX, violinist Alicia Jane Turner and Dead Light.. Performed together at the Old Church Stoke Newington, this show harnessed the power and vulnerability of breath in a swelling symphony of voice, drone, piano, tape loops and violin. Sylvia embodies a mantra from Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar: “I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am, I am, I am.”

NYX is an electronic drone choir and otherworldly electric chorus, re-embodying live electronics and extended vocal
techniques. NYX are reshaping the role of the traditional female choir, testing the limits of organic and synthetic modulation to explore the full spectrum of collective female voice as an instrument...more

My god, what an absolutely incredible Suite. I'll admit, I've struggled to get into Pharoah Sanders due to diving headfirst into some of his most challenging catalogue and that never worked. This is the perfect place to restart. Floating Points is new for me and I can honestly say I've never heard synthesizer music this lush and organic before. the LSO is just perfect. This is one of those albums that any serious music fan needs in their life. The perfect swan song for the great Pharaoh! 5/5 ClassyMusicSnob

A darkly beautiful, melancholic, and spiritually stirring enchantment. Hausswolff's soulful pipe organ conjures an entrancing journey through the vast depths of emotion and instinct. jules_721
